Karate Outreach Program

                               GurlFytrz Competition Team

"The ultimate aim of Karate lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of character of its participants."
There were some concerns expressed to justify not participating in the Utah Open:  that students would only be competing for 5 minutes total, or that they would be waiting around all day, or that there chances of winning weren't all that great.
My response is, while these assertions may be true, they have nothing to do with why we compete in tournaments.
The purpose of tournaments, in my mind, is to enhance our training by teaching us how to handle potentially stress-filled situations, to master our fear, and to learn to refocus our anxiety into a more positive energy that can be used to obtain our objectives.  It's increasingly difficult to have an atmosphere like that in the dojo, since (as is the natural order of things) the dojo is a safe familiar surrounding and people are accustomed to each other.  Tournaments provide an element, in a controlled setting, of doubt and insecurity that enable us to hone our skills at dealing with the unknown.

Our mission is very simple, to spread the word about abuse and represent our Non-Profit nationally by setting an excellent example as martial artists, coaches, and judges on the national circuit, participating in competitions, and educating the women in the wonderful world of martial arts.

GurlFytrz Non-Profit has a unique program with karate, as we will school women to defend themselves and also give the women and teens the chance to perform in the arts as competitors, students, and coaches. Any and all women-teen women and children of the women in our program will learn self-defense (mandatory) If they choose to carry it further than that they can try-out for the competition team and help with our mission of spreading the word about Domestic Violence issues in our country. All this will help build confidence and hopefully help save lives as well.

Our competition team will be our outreach program to spread the word nationally about the urgency of helping with domestic violence and abuse. As we all know it is not just inner city women that are affected by this. At every competition we go to, we provide literature to spectators all over the country. Our hope is to not only bring more people on board , but to also help people realize the urgency of this issue. We campaign at every tournament to obtain more schools that will offer free self-defense classes to any women and teen women that need it but cannot afford it. We have various schools on board already and hope to add to that over the next three years. These schools get listed on our GurlFytrz website so women that visit our site can see where they can go to get both help, support, and free self-defense at a GF supportive school. Eventually we hope to have hundreds of schools to choose from so any woman can find a school near her that works with us by offering free self-defense.
