Self Defense
"Awareness is everything in defending Oneself"When it comes to self-defense, there's no such thing as being blissfully unaware. I try to stress that in the classes I teach. We spend a good amount of time talking about statistics, attitude and awareness.
You absolutely cannot plan when or where you will be attacked. You can however prepare your mind to be ready and to respond. And simply being aware can often prevent an attack.
Convicted rapists serving prison sentences are often questioned about the way they plan an attack, and who they choose. Most of them agree they look for victims that will not fight back. They look for women who might have their head down, don't appear aware of their surroundings and those who don't seem confident enough to fight back.
One of the easiest ways to prevent an attack is by simply looking like a force to be reckoned with. Walk with confidence and awareness. If you find yourself in an uncomfortable or dangerous situation, don't be afraid to look a man in the eye and ask him why he is following you, or scream at him to leave you alone. That right there will tell him you are not a victim and that you're not afraid to fight back. Often, that is enough for him to look for someone else that is not so brave.
So be brave, be confident, and do not look like a victim. Be aware and keep your chin up.
